Job Description
The Department of Engineering Technology at Miami University in Hamilton invites applications for a Postdoctoral fellow position in the area of Digital Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This position is primarily supported by incoming funded research grants, and well-positioned to promote Miami University Polytechnic’s strategic initiative to advance applied research, workforce development, and industry collaboration in smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 technologies.
The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and industry partners to conduct applied research in AI-driven digital manufacturing, industrial automation, and smart systems integration. Responsibilities include supporting curriculum development, laboratory demonstrations, and externally funded projects focused on intelligent factory systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct applied research in AI-enabled manufacturing systems, including digital twins, AR/VR immersive technology integration, and real-time process optimization.
Integrate and automate manufacturing equipment (e.g., CNC machines, industrial robots, PLCs, machine vision systems) within a smart factory environment.
Develop data acquisition pipelines using sensors, IIoT devices, and edge computing platforms.
Deploy machine learning models to enhance process control and system responsiveness.
Collaborate with industry partners to identify research challenges, co-develop solutions, and assist in prototyping.
Co-author academic publications, grant proposals, and technical reports.
Mentor undergraduate researchers and contribute to experiential learning opportunities.
Assist in maintaining and expanding lab infrastructure related to Digital Manufacturing and AI.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a closely related field by the start date.
Demonstrated expertise in AI/ML applications in manufacturing, system integration, or industrial automation.
Experience with integration of robotics, PLCs, CNCs, and sensor networks in a manufacturing context.
Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C++) and familiarity with AI/ML tools and platforms.
Consideration may be given to applicants with:
Hands-on experience with digital twin simulation platforms, edge computing, and smart factory infrastructure.
Background in data acquisition, signal processing, or real-time control systems.
Familiarity with industry standards and protocols such as OPC UA, Modbus, or MTConnect.
Experience working in interdisciplinary and collaborative research environments.
Prior involvement in grant writing or sponsored research projects.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
