Dr. Yaxing Yao is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to join his research on human-centered privacy and human-centered AI in the Department of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University. The position is expected to start in Fall 2026.
This position will focus on exploring new research in AI governance, with a focus on privacy, security, and safety for users with diverse characteristics. The successful candidate will lead new research projects, participate in research grant writing, and assist in managing Dr. Yao's lab. This work is primarily conducted at the Homewood Campus in Baltimore. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in privacy and security, and Computer Science.
Applicants with strong credentials and motivation should still apply even if they lack these specific qualifications. These are full-time positions with an initial appointment of 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding.
Qualifications
Qualification:
PhD in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field.
Strong publication record in peer-reviewed venues (e.g., CHI, USENIX Security, IEEE Security & Privacy) relevant to privacy, security, or AI.
Excellent teamwork skills for working in an interdisciplinary environment involving engineers, computer scientists, and designers.
Technical expertise in programming
Proficiency in designing and implementing AI models
Strong understanding of AI Governance
Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, multi-lab environment.
Ability to lead research projects independently from concept to implementation.
Capability to formulate research methodologies and manage project timeline

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The following additional vaccine requirements may apply, depending upon your campus. Please contact the hiring department for more information. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
