Job Description
Job Description Summary:
Title: Assistant Professor, Applied Mathematics
Wentworth Institute of Technology invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Applied Mathematics within the School of Computing and Data Science, beginning Fall 2026.
About Wentworth and the School of Computing and Data Science:
Wentworth is a university of opportunity recognized for providing a high return on investment for its graduates. Our mission is to empower, inspire, and innovate through experiential learning and a student-centered approach to education.
The School of Computing and Data Science (SCDS) includes more than 30 full-time faculty who offer undergraduate majors in Applied Mathematics, Applied Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Information Technology, as well as graduate degrees in Computer Science, Data Science, and Cybersecurity.
The SCDS has teaching and research strengths in artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, high-performance computing, mobile and web application development, stochastic processes, dynamical systems, financial mathematics, graph theory, algebra, and modeling. Faculty in SCDS maintain strong collaborative relationships with colleagues in sciences, humanities, and electrical and computer engineering, among other disciplines.
Our faculty represents a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Collaboration is highly encouraged and supported, and our School has no departmental boundaries. Many of our faculty bring significant industrial, consulting, entrepreneurial, and project management experience, contributing to a dynamic and applied academic environment.
Responsibilities:
Teaching: Faculty typically teach 3 courses (12 credit hours) each fall and spring semester. Faculty are encouraged to incorporate some measure of experiential/project-based content in their curricula.
Scholarly Work: Faculty are expected to engage in active research within their fields of expertise.
Service to the Institute: Examples include mentoring extracurricular student organizations, and committee work.
We value creative and passionate educators who can teach to a diverse student body; as such we seek to amplify the perspectives of the faculty body and encourage applications from members of groups underrepresented in STEM.
If you are interested in preparing our next generation of engineers and designers and if you have substantial experience with project-based learning and undergraduate mathematics education innovation, then we’d love to hear from you.
Minimum Requirements:
Ph.D in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or related discipline.
Working knowledge of mathematical concepts, practices and procedures and the ability to research and teach them in varied applications.
Substantial professional experience in a directly related field.
Preferred Requirements:
Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
3 years of related work experience.
A preferred candidate will have research, curricular development, and teaching experience in mathematical modeling (e.g. Catastrophic modeling) or simulation (e.g. discrete time and/or discrete event).
Position Details:
The position includes a comprehensive benefits package and a competitive salary. Benefits are described briefly HR: https://wit.edu/careers/work-wentworth
At this time, the university is unable to sponsor applicants for H-1B visas.
It is expected that the salary range for this position is between $89,042 and $106,467. The low end of the pay range in all faculty searches is at the minimum salary for the rank per the collective bargaining agreement between Wentworth Institute of Technology and the Wentworth Faculty Federation, Local 2403, AFT MA, AFL-CIO (the “Faculty Federation” or “Federation”). The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment. The range does not include any salary stipend from a named-professorship. Note that these are two semester equivalent salaries.
This position comes with a 10% retirement contribution (no matching required) according to the current Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Wentworth Faculty Federation.
Wentworth uses a three-semester per year schedule. The faculty contracts are for two semesters (fall and spring) with optional summer teaching, which is paid on a prorated basis of the provided two-semester salary. This means the annual compensation could reach 1.5 times the provided two-semester salary, depending on the availability of summer classes.
