The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University invites applications for an adjunct lecturer (temporary instructor position) to teach the course Senior Design I during the fall 2025 semester. This course is a project-oriented capstone to the principles and practices of civil and environmental engineering design. The course focuses on team projects under the guidance of faculty and outside industry mentors on different areas civil engineering, e.g., structures, transportation, geotechnical, environmental, hydraulics, etc. Students are guided on the preparation of written and oral technical reports.
Adjunct lecturers are temporary instructors. Reoccurring appointments are possible depending on teaching needs, past performance and the availability of funds. Pay is based on established university rates for temporary adjunct instructors.
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field with 5 years applicable teaching and/or industry experience or a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field with 10 years applicable industry experience (engineering design, consulting engineering, construction management or municipal engineering). Proficiency in the use of computer tools (word processing, spreadsheets, electronic filing managment systems, and web-based systems).
Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching experience in a college in an environment similar to Stony Brook University
Licensed Professional Engineer
10-plus years of experience in engineering design, consulting engineering, construction management, and/or municipal engineering.
Managed a multi-disciplinary staff of other professional engineers and designers in the preparation of contract drawings and specifications for prime construction contracts.

Department description: The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 2012 and is one of nine academic departments within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). The department currently has over 180 undergraduate students and a growing graduate program. As one of the only two comprehensive (Bachelors to Ph.D.) civil engineering programs within the State University of New York, the Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University is playing a key role in addressing critical infrastructure challenges regionally and globally. The department is a partner of the New York State (NYS) Center for Clean Water Technology, the NYS Infrastructure, Transportation, and Security Center, and the Atlantic Marine Energy Center. Faculty also have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERT), the Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation.
