The Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, invites applications for a tenure-track open rank faculty position, leveraging the latest generative AI models and methods in studying human cognition. Generative artificial intelligence is reshaping cognitive science. The past few years have witnessed the emergence of powerful AI systems that can use language, reason, and act in increasingly human-like ways. From these developments, a new subfield of cognitive science is emerging, one that compares complex patterns of information processing across biological and artificial minds, and uses insights from the study of natural minds to develop new computational capacities in artificial minds.
We seek a scholar who will lead Michigan into this next era of research on cognition. This is an academic year appointment with an expected start in August 25, 2026. This position is part of a cluster of four new AI-related positions in the Departments of Psychology, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Psychiatry, with all four faculty expected to affiliate with the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science. New faculty hired will be expected to establish an independent research program and will be committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship.
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline. Applicants will submit a cover letter, current curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy and experience, statement of current and future research plans, sample papers, teaching evaluations or other evidence of teaching excellence, and contact information for three letters of reference.
To apply, submit materials by September 15 at the following site: https://apply.interfolio.com/169170. The application site requires applicants to provide contact information for reference letter writers, who will be contacted by the committee (also due by September 15). For inquiries about this position, please contact the search committee chair, Rick Lewis, rickl@umich.edu.
Employment will require a successful criminal background check and may require an institutional reference check regarding any misconduct. Candidates may be required to submit a self-disclosure form as well as an authorization to release information form, and must meet all degree requirements prior to the start date of the position. The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Qualified women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply. The University is also supportive of the needs of dual-career couples.
