Reporting to Fred Hutch Chief Clinical Operations Officer (CCOO), the Associate Vice President (AVP), Radiation Oncology will partner closely with the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Vice Chair of Radiation Oncology for Clinical Affairs to lead clinical, research, and administrative radiation oncology operations at Fred Hutch owned sites of practice, and is responsible for strategic planning and execution of the vision for growth and development of the Integrated Radiation Oncology Program at Fred Hutch and the University of Washington (UW) Medicine. This role has a close partnership and dotted line reporting relationship to the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at UW Medicine.

The AVP, Radiation Oncology will be accountable for working in partnership with key stakeholders and leading the development of a unified strategy and supporting governance model across a complex, geographically dispersed group of locations and including multiple organizational entities to ensure alignment, collaboration and consistent implementation of operations and patient experience across facilities. Within an enterprise that treats approximately 4000 patients annually with advanced treatment modalities including proton therapy, neutron therapy, gamma knife and advanced X-ray technology, this leader will co-develop and implement strategies to meet the needs of each area, ensuring appropriate resource utilization and rationalization of service offerings, consistent patient experience and the highest quality care and outcomes, with a focus on accessibility. This leader will co-create and lead an enterprise-wide growth strategy for Radiation Oncology clinical programs, oversee clinical service initiatives, financial performance, patient experience, provider and staff engagement, and clinical research and quality. The AVP will ensure clinical service plans are coordinated with the Department of Radiation Oncology strategic plans through ongoing alignment and direction from faculty leadership.

The AVP, Radiation Oncology will work closely with the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and other senior leaders at Fred Hutch and UW Medicine to develop and grow the radiation oncology research program including providing administrative leadership support to the scientific division on grant funded research and academic activities (faculty recruitment, post-doc program, seminar series, etc.) that support the strategic vision/plan in Precision Radiation Oncology across the research pillars (theranostics, adaptive radiotherapy, radiation and immune modulation, symptom science, AI/informatics, global oncology).

This position will be 1.0FTE/full-time, Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm with some variability.

Responsibilities

Clinical & Administrative Leadership

• Provides administrative leadership of the Radiation Oncology enterprise including Fred Hutch's Radiation Oncology Program as well as the Integrated Radiation Oncology Program with UW Medicine. Includes oversight of clinical, financial, staffing, equipment and facilities for Radiation Oncology in Fred Hutch owned locations and integration and alignment for UW Medical Center-based operations.
• Ensures operational excellence for advanced treatment modalities including proton therapy and neutron therapy, optimizing equipment utilization, patient scheduling, and clinical workflows specific to these specialized services. Oversees equipment lifecycle management, capital planning, and regulatory compliance for radiation therapy systems.
• Leads operational implementation for Radiation Oncology care access and experience, patient flow and upstream/downstream care management and strategic partnerships and ensures development and consistent delivery of patient care and an operating system across locations.
• Partners with the scientific division leadership and Department Chair/SVP to the academic activities of the scientific division, including faculty recruitment, seminar series, pilot grant program. The AVP will be responsible for developing and submitting the annual budget for the Division in partnership with the SVP and Chair.
• Accountable for continuous quality improvement and ensuring greater standardization of care processes in partnership with Radiation Oncology physician leadership and improving accessibility/ patient care experience across Radiation Oncology at all sites.
• Works effectively with system shared clinical services and the Department of Radiation Oncology to assure effective deployment of services in each location.
• Responsible for P&L for Fred Hutch owned Radiation Oncology sites. Monitors and improves financial and service results. Effectively connects operations to funds flow models and revenue cycle processes to improve affordability and financial results. Advises the Chair regarding capital budget and budget strategies for sites and prioritizes capital expenditures within budget constraints.
• Develops and uses standard metrics and dashboards and makes those visible across the enterprise to create common understanding of current financial and operational state. Creates and implements action plans to achieve desired outcomes for financial and operational improvement.

Research & Academic Mission Support

• Works collaboratively with SVP/Chair to integrate research activities into clinical operations, ensuring appropriate resource allocation and space planning for research programs. Supports faculty recruitment efforts aligned with research and clinical growth strategies.
• Partners with the SVP/Chair, scientific leadership, and VP of Clinical Research to enhance patient access to clinical trials.
• Partners with the central clinical trials office, Clinical Research Support (CRS), to ensure operational support for the clinical research portfolio including multi-institutional research collaborations and cooperative group trials.
• Supports the faculty-led development of the Radiation Oncology research portfolio and department; and seeks to expand patient access to clinical trials through operational excellence and strategic planning.
• Responsible for the administrative activities of the Radiation Oncology Division, including faculty recruitment, seminar series, and faculty affairs; responsible for developing administrative needs as the scientific division grows.

Strategic Planning & Growth

• Serves key leadership role in ongoing Radiation Oncology enterprise strategic planning and leads eventual plan implementation. Contributes to development of strategic direction and vision for Radiation Oncology delivery with enterprise-wide strategic direction/vision; serves as communication link between Department and Cancer Center senior management and clinical program leadership.
• Develops a deep understanding of market dynamics and enterprise assets and constraints, partnering with Fred Hutch and UW Medicine stakeholders to develop and execute a plan for growth including potential additional sites, recruitment, partnerships and additive technology and modalities.
• Develops strategic plans to optimize utilization of advanced treatment technologies (proton therapy, neutron therapy, theranostics) and evaluates emerging technologies and treatment modalities for potential clinical adoption. Leads business planning for new service lines and expansion opportunities.

Governance & Collaboration

• Collaborates with the Chair Radiation Oncology and Vice Chair of Radiation Oncology for Clinical Affairs across the integrated Radiation Oncology program to architect and implement a governance and management structure for all sites and activities that fosters greater clarity in decision making, reduced variability in care processes and excellence in patient experience.
• Supports the development and fosters effective collaboration between clinical departments, faculty, locations, internal and external organizational partners and other affiliated groups to ensure an integrated approach to providing services and that the full resources of the newly aligned integrated program are brought to bear.
• Interfaces with colleagues across Fred Hutch and UW Medicine to ensure alignment and engagement for systemwide initiatives and to ensure appropriate resource allocation to meet goals, priorities, and deadlines.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Hospital Administration, Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is required
• 5-7 years of management experience in a leadership position within a complex healthcare environment, balancing the missions of clinical care, teaching and research.
• Direct experience in radiation oncology
• In-depth knowledge and experience in radiation oncology-specific operations
• In-depth knowledge of finance and revenue cycle and market forces
• Demonstrated ability to lead in complex, matrixed organizational structures with multiple stakeholders
• Strong financial acumen including P&L management, capital planning, and business case development

Preferred:

• A graduate degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred
• Experience with proton and neutron therapy; Experience in an organization that includes multiple sites and partner organizations is preferred.
• Familiarity with NIH/NCI grant mechanisms and research compliance requirements
• Management experience in a leadership position within a complex academic environment

The annual base salary range for this position is from $213,325.00 to $375,107.00, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
