Stony Brook University’s Department of Technology and Society invites applicants for a non-tenure track teaching faculty position with an expected start date of Spring 2026.
The selected candidate should hold a Ph.D. or a Master’s and five (5) years of relevant professional experience demonstrating advanced expertise in the field of Engineering Ethics, Philosophy, Engineering, or a related field may be considered. They should have a strong commitment to teaching and have a passion for fostering ethical awareness and responsible engineering practices. They will also be committed to fostering a respectful and supportive environment to ensure fair access, encourage varied perspectives, and a culture of mutual respect in engineering education. The selected candidate will hold the official title of Lecturer or a local title of assistant professor of practice contingent upon qualifications.
The selected candidate would be expected to teach courses in accordance with the department's workload guidelines. The number of courses assigned per semester may be modified depending on course enrollment, service assignments, or other activities.
As a lecturer in Engineering Ethics, you will have a unique opportunity to inspire and guide our engineering students towards a deep understanding of ethical principles and their practical application in the fields of technology and engineering. You will be an integral part of our dedicated faculty, contributing to our mission of producing socially responsible and ethically conscious engineers and technologists.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Course Instruction: Develop and deliver engaging undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering ethics in general, and responsible AI in particular, covering topics such as high-level ethical theories (e.g. utilitarianism, Kantianism, libertarianism), professional responsibility, trustworthy machine learning, social and environmental impact, privacy and data safety.
2. Curriculum Enhancement: Collaborate with colleagues across the Engineering College to continually refine and innovate our engineering ethics curricula, integrating real-world case studies and practical scenarios.
3. Student Engagement: Create an inclusive and participatory learning environment that encourages student discussion, critical thinking, and ethical reflection.
4. Mentorship: Provide academic guidance and mentorship to students, helping them navigate ethical challenges and develop a strong ethical foundation for their engineering careers.
5. Outreach: Actively engage in outreach activities to promote awareness of engineering ethics, both within the university community and outside in industry, local communities, and the media. Contribute to departmental, college, and university service through participation in committees, academic initiatives, and collaborative efforts
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent). In lieu of a Ph.D., a Master?s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and five years of relevant professional experience demonstrating advanced expertise in the field in Engineering Ethics, Philosophy, Engineering, or a related field may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Engineering Ethics, Philosophy, Engineering, or a related field. Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level in engineering ethics. Expertise in engineering ethics with a focus on practical applications.

Department Description: The Department of Technology and Society is an integral part of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Through our academic programs and sponsored projects, the Department of Technology and Society has enhanced the technological literacy and educational opportunities of thousands of students. We have also provided university, regional, and national leadership in educational innovation and STS (Science, Technology, and Society) curriculum development.
