About the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning
The Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning was launched in autumn 2016 to support Ohio State as an exemplary of teaching excellence and to provide at-scale professional learning, evidence-informed instructional strategies, and research support that elevates, across the university, the work of all who teach. The Institute:

The Curriculum and Instruction Specialist provides a key leadership role within the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, supporting academic units across The Ohio State University in the design, development, and enhancement of academic programs and courses. This position brings deep expertise in educational development and contributes to the universitys academic mission through a range of activities, including leading curriculum and course design support, leading program and assessment planning support, providing instructional consultations and teaching support, designing and facilitating workshops and learning communities, strategically aligning educational initiatives, and project management and implementation.
In the first three years, the Curriculum and Instruction Specialist will focus primarily on collaborating with faculty and staff to develop courses and programs affiliated with the Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society. Beyond this initial focus, the Curriculum and Instruction Specialist will also lead educational development projects across the university and contribute to educator professional learning across a range of emerging critical areas, including teaching with technology (e.g., digital accessibility, online and hybrid instruction, and generative AI fluency).
Responsibilities
Curriculum and Program Assessment Design
Assist academic units (e.g., Chase Center, colleges, departments) with identifying high-level curricular needs, including aligning curricula to statutory and/or unit missions to provide the knowledge, habits, and dispositions to help Ohio State students flourish.
Identify gaps and opportunities in the current academic landscape (e.g., research similar programs at peer institutions to understand offerings and naming conventions; help assess the demand for skills and careers related to academic programs)
Support alignment of academic units curricular plans with university-wide strategic initiatives such as co-curricular experiences that incorporate high-impact practices (e.g., common intellectual experiences, capstone courses and projects, ePortfolios, internships) and preparing students for various post-graduation plans (e.g., graduate school, law school, industry, public service, K-12 education, business, nonprofit organizations).
Assist with developing and implementing course- and program-level assessment plans designed to enhance teaching and learning.
Offer guidance on academic units posture toward artificial intelligence within educational programs.
Facilitate discussions with faculty within and across academic units to foster perspective sharing during curriculum design.
Course Design
Assist faculty and staff in academic units (e.g., Chase Center, colleges, departments) with drafting syllabi and course approval requests.
Provide Course Design Institutes (CDIs) and consultations that apply a backward design process and universal design for learning approaches to align student learning outcomes, assessments, and teaching practices.
Consult on use of university technology tools to support course-level assessments.
Advise faculty on using course assessment data to inform course redesign.
Individual Instructor and Unit Consultations
Contribute to coordination across academic units (e.g., Chase Center, colleges, departments) and the Office of Academic Affairs as academic program and course proposals advance through the curricular approval process.
Provide instructor and unit consultations on evidence-informed teaching practices and collecting student feedback (e.g., classroom assessment techniques, mid-course feedback surveys, class observations, student focus groups).
Collaborate with faculty, staff, and academic leaders to design and facilitate customized unit-level workshops and events on college teaching.
During the first through third years, assist the Chase Center with drafting CarmenCanvas learning management system course shells, and connect the Center with university resources and professional learning resources to sustain and expand teaching initiatives.
Large-Scale Workshops and Resources
Design, plan, and implement programming on evidence-informed teaching practices (e.g., workshops, conference sessions).
Contribute to the design of on-demand educator professional learning articles, videos, and resources (e.g., handouts, templates, job aids).
Contribute to the Drake Institutes repository of educational development materials (e.g., workshop materials, literature reviews, teaching guides).
Program Management and Support
Provide administrative leadership for the Course Design Institute (CDI) program (e.g., develop annual calendar, lead Institute staff in co-facilitating each CDI, schedule guest speakers, marketing and recruitment).
Lead some of the Institute-managed Teaching Endorsements.
In consultation with Drake Institute leadership, develop and manage detailed project schedules and work plans.
Provide updates on a consistent basis to stakeholders about each project, adjustments, and progress.
Collaborate with the Institutes leadership team and data analyst to evaluate the Drake Institutes programs and provide recommendations for continuously improving initiatives to enhance teaching and learning.
Additional Duties
Engage in continual professional learning to maintain and strengthen knowledge and skills.
Actively contribute to university, state, and national dialogue and innovation on college teaching.
Contribute to the continual professional learning of educational development colleagues within the Drake Institute and across the university.
Serve on selected university committees on teaching and learning.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
4 years of relevant experience required
Required Qualifications
Experience designing and delivering educational development programs and services to support academic programs and educators (e.g., curriculum design, instructional design, instructional consultations).
Experience teaching or supporting citizenship education or related field (e.g., history, legal education, philosophy, political science).
Experience teaching or supporting educators who teach across multiple modalities (e.g., in person, online, and hybrid).
Experience supporting digital accessibility and universal design for learning.
Strong verbal, written, and visual communications skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently to meet organizational goals and outcomes within specified timeframes.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a dynamic team.
Desired Qualifications
Masters Degree
Experience working in a college center for teaching and learning.
Experience teaching at least one college course.
