The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University seeks applications for the NIST-PREP Postdoctoral Fellowship. This is a non-tenure position with a start date of July 1, 2025. The appointment for the position is for two years. This 100% research position is ideal for a recent PhD in Mathematical Sciences who seeks to broaden their research experience by working jointly with scientists and engineers from other disciplines in a highly collaborative environment.
We anticipate hiring two fellows to fill two positions with different projects:
1. Developing novel machine learning algorithms for the prediction of physical and chemical properties, infrared and mass spectra, and ionization cross sections using data derived from experiment and computation.
2. Using partial differential equations to model diffusion onto a surface on which both specific and non-specific interactions occur, to investigate the effects of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) degradation on measurements.
Applicants should indicate their project preference in the cover letter.
Candidates are required to have received a Ph.D. degree in Mathematical Sciences or a related field by the start of this appointment. The ideal candidate for Project 1 should have:
- A minimum of one year experience in conducting data science research.
- Significant course work in one or more of chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics and/or computer science.
- Familiarity with one or more AI/ML software packages.
The ideal candidate for Project 2 should have:
- A background in Partial Differential Equations and its numerical solution.
- Significant course work in one or more of mathematics, statistics and/or computer science
Both positions require the ability to program in a modern computational language.
Applicants should have strong research potential. The expected salary range for this position is $62,500 to $78,000. The referenced salary range is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will be based on factors including, but not limited to, the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate - e.g., years in rank, training, field, discipline, other work experience, and other similar factors; geographic location; internal equity; external market conditions; and other factors as reasonably determined by the University. The successful candidate will also be provided with professional development funds. The position comes with fringe benefits which include health insurance.
Diversity, equity and inclusion are integral values of the Department and University. Accordingly, the Department seeks candidates who can contribute to racial equity, diversity, and inclusion through service, mentorship, teaching, and scholarship.
All applicants should submit their application online at
Consideration of applications will begin on January 30, 2025, until the position is filled.
Submit the relevant materials (i) a cover letter, (ii) CV, (iii) a concise description of research experience, (iv) three letters of recommendation.

Johns Hopkins University remains committed to its founding principle, that education for all students should be grounded in exploration and discovery. Hopkins students are challenged not just to learn but also to advance learning itself. Critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, and entrepreneurship are all encouraged and nourished in this unique educational environment. After more than 130 years, Johns Hopkins remains a world leader in both teaching and research. Faculty members and their research colleagues at the university's Applied Physics Laboratory have each year since 1979 won Johns Hopkins more federal research and development funding than any other university. The university has nine academic divisions and campuses throughout the Baltimore-Washington area. The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the Whiting School of Engineering, the School of Education and the Carey Business School are based at the Homewood campus in northern Baltimore. The schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing share a campus in east Baltimore with The Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Peabody Institute, a leading professional school of music, is located on Mount Vernon Place in downtown Bal...timore. The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies is located in Washington's Dupont Circle area.
