The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.

The CMU SPUD Lab, within the HCII, is hiring a research associate to join the GenAI Policy and Practice project. This project investigates the gap between how developers use generative AI tools in programming contexts and the policies that govern their use in industry. Our aim is to co-create policies that respect company intellectual property (IP) preferences while enabling developers to use these tools effectively and responsibly.

Core Responsibilities

• Help conduct developer studies to understand how developers today use generative AI in their day-to-day work
• Analyze rules and policies that guide how software developers work
• Translate insights from studies into design recommendations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree; Master's preferred
• Experience in web and software development.
• Strong understanding of developer workflows and tooling.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a research environment.
• Experience with user-centered design or participatory design methods."
• A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
