THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Department of Animal Sciences within the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resources Sciences (CAHNRS) at Washington State University (WSU) is seeking a dynamic, motivated, and problem- solving research and Extension leader to join an extraordinary team of scientists, educators and extension experts within our department and university. The successful individual will develop an integrated Research (70%) and Extension (30%) program advancing the mission of the Department of Animal Sciences. The term of this tenure-track, assistant professor rank faculty position is a nine-month academic year appointment. In addition to the academic appointment salary, the successful candidate is eligible for additional two months' salary for continuing research and Extension responsibilities. Leave time accounts for the balance of the calendar year. As a faculty member in the Department of Animal Science, the incumbent will develop a nationally recognized and regionally relevant research and Extension program focused on resilient (or sustainable) dairy cattle production systems. The successful candidate will provide statewide leadership for planning, implementing, and evaluating an Extension education and outreach program that focuses on sustainability initiatives related to dairy cattle industry environmental resiliency and/or precision agriculture. The incumbent will extend science-based innovations and technologies to benefit dairy cattle producers, national and regional agencies and the public vested in sustainable dairy production systems. Laboratory equipment and research space will be available at the WSU Pullman campus. The successful applicant will have a familiarity working with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences, an interest in working with a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and with people from diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusive excellence.
The Washington dairy industry has long demonstrated its dedication to preserving natural resources, enhancing biodiversity, and ensuring the health of ecosystems within which it operates. This new faculty position will support these efforts by driving innovative research, fostering sustainable farming practices, and reducing the carbon footprint of dairies. In recognition of the importance of this effort, the Washington dairy industry is providing significant start-up funding. RESPONSIBILITIES:
The research program of the successful candidate will address issues facing the dairy cattle industry involving adaptation to environmental or policy changes and improvements towards lowering the environmental impacts. Critical areas of research include reduced greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the carbon footprint. The individual will establish a nationally recognized integrated research and Extension program supported by competitive extramural funding from state, regional, and national agencies and agricultural industry. The individual will positively influence the environmental sustainability of the northwest dairy industry by disseminating research-based information by publishing results in appropriate peer-reviewed journals and through Extension media outlets, delivering presentations at scientific conferences and industry/grower meetings, and using the internet and social media platforms. The individual will work collaboratively with other researchers across WSU, Extension professionals, private crop consultants, the producer community, and other stakeholders and will actively engage in mentoring and supervision of graduate students. The individual will complement and extend current animal science initiatives and strengthen the Department of Animal Sciences. The successful candidate will integrate with Departmental missions and expertise enhancing environmental compatibility of livestock operations and increasing the economic profitability of food animal production systems. This position will serve a critical need for the Department of Animal Sciences to maintain excellence in milk production, dairy cow efficiency, student and stakeholder engagement and best practices associated with environmental stewardship and animal husbandry.
This is a permanent tenure-track position. The successful candidate will be a faculty member in the Department of Animal Sciences and will report to the Chair of Animal Sciences.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD in Animal Science or a closely related field at time of hire, with a focus on dairy cattle production systems, and associated disciplines such as environmental science, nutrition, precision agriculture, etc.
Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with diverse audiences in groups and one-on-one settings.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated excellence in program planning based on dairy cattle production system needs, program implementation, and program evaluation.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical audiences in oral and written forms.
Record of competitive grant success commensurate with career level.
Twelve or more months of Post-doctoral or industry experience.
Demonstration of successful team performance and work experiences with diverse stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals and groups of diverse cultures, and underrepresented/minority groups.
PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS
WSU Extension faculty engage with local, state and regional stakeholders to identify needs to develop focused programming to meet those needs. Extension faculty are expected to deliver onsite and virtual Extension teaching and programming, online courses, continuing education, technical assistance, and consultation independently and in collaboration with other faculty. State Specialists work with county and regional Specialists to support the individual, organizational, and community goals of Washington learners and clients. Extension faculty are also expected to develop innovative and research-based educational materials and scholarly products, such as curricula, publications, presentations, websites, decision aids, apps, and other Extension resources. Faculty are expected to be involved in the development of applied studies and the subsequent delivery of those findings through refereed journal publications, demonstrations, field days, workshops, print, digital and other electronic media, as appropriate.
THE DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SCIENCES:
The Department of Animal Sciences at WSU offers the only four-year Animal Sciences degree in Washington state. Research in Animal Sciences is focused on mission-oriented and fundamental research in the areas of sustainable resources for society and improving animal and human health. These research foci include animal behavior and well-being, environmental sustainability, genomics and genetics, muscle biology, nutrition, reproductive biology and physiology. Research is conducted in new state- of- the- art research facilities that facilitate undergraduate and graduate student research projects. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
