The Department of Technology and Society (DTS) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position specializing in Responsible AI. We are seeking a scholar with a background in computer science or a related technical field, whose research addresses the ethical, societal, and policy dimensions of artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will join a dynamic department committed to shaping AI development and deployment in ways that are technically sound, transparent, fair, accountable, human-centered, and aligned with societal well-being.
Key Areas of Interest:
AI ethics: Ensuring the fairness, accountability, and transparency of AI systems.
Bias and fairness in AI: Addressing how AI technologies can perpetuate or mitigate bias and inequality.
AI policy and governance: Exploring how policy frameworks can guide the responsible development and deployment of AI.
Human-centered AI: Understanding how AI can be ethically designed to serve and benefit all communities.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will conduct innovative research in Responsible AI with an aim to publish in top-tier conferences and journals, and will develop and teach interdisciplinary courses on AI?s societal impacts, including ethics, fairness, and policy. The candidate will lead externally funded projects in AI governance, societal impacts, and technical advancements, collaborate with colleagues across disciplines, including computer science, political science, and public policy, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, training the next generation of ethical AI researchers and practitioners.

Required Qualifications: PhD (or foreign equivalent) in a relevant field (Responsible AI, Data Science, Computer Science, Public Policy, Ethics, or Social Sciences). Strong research agenda focused on the ethical, societal, and policy impacts of AI, informed by a solid understanding of the underlying technologies. Demonstrated research contributions through scholarly publications. Research expertise in computer science or a related technical field, with a focus on AI and its ethical, societal, and policy dimensions. Potential to develop and teach interdisciplinary courses on AI?s societal impacts.
Preferred Qualifications: Background in Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML), broadly defined. Established or emerging research record with publications on the ethical and societal impacts of AI, informed by a solid understanding of the underlying technologies. Demonstrated potential for securing funding through NSF or other research grants to support responsible AI research programs. Experience or a strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with a focus on addressing AI's ethical, societal, and policy challenges.
