Position title: Postdoctoral Scholar - Chattopadhyay Lab
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC salary scales set the minimum pay based on the individuals Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. See the salary scale titled, Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee /Postdoctoral Scholar-Fellow / Postdoctoral Scholar-Paid Direct -Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $66,737 - $69,209.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

Position duration: Maximum Duration of Service in a Postdoctoral Title - Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time and the initial appointment is for a minimum of two years, with the possibility of reappointment. The total duration of an individuals postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution.

Position Description


The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for postdoctoral scholars. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Ashesh Chattopadhyay, the postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for working on the proposed tasks of a recently funded NSF project on building physically-consistent AI emulators for the climate system.

Applicants with expertise in building large-scale deep learning models and experience in handling Earth system model outputs or reanalysis data (ERA5, NCEP) or previous experience with training scientific machine learning models on physical data are particularly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)

• Numerical and programming skills.
• Experience with machine learning models.
• Experience running models on HPC infrastructure.
• Experience dealing with either fluid dynamics and/or large complex climate datasets.

Additional qualifications (required at the time of appointment)

• Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in atmospheric, oceanic, or earth sciences; mechanical engineering; applied mathematics; computer science; or a related discipline.
  

Preferred qualifications

• Dealing with global climate model outputs
• Ability to write pytorch or JAX models and run them
• Training or running AI weather models like FourCastNet, GraphCast, Fuxi, etc
• Some understanding of atmospheric physics and dynamics
