Assistant or Associate Professor in Architectural Design
Carnegie Mellon University: College of Fine Arts: Architecture
Description
The School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University (CM-A) is seeking candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Architectural Design.
At CM-A, we believe that design education, research, and creative practice are in direct dialogue with society’s evolving concerns and must critically examine its current paradigms while striving for creativity. Building on the school's established reputation and expertise in sustainability, urbanism, and computation, Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture is focused on addressing three imminent challenges facing society: a) the profound impact of climate change and the role architecture plays in it; b) the implication of artificial intelligence to human agency; and c) the imperative of social justice and the need for greater equity, inclusion, and intersectionality in the construction of our built environment.
This position aligns with the core missions of the school's NAAB-accredited Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) and Master of Architecture (M.Arch) programs – to train architects in the creative and professional practice of architecture leading to licensure. We are seeking candidates with interest and experience in comprehensive building design who can promote and expand innovative professional design practices.
Responsibilities
Teaching: Teaching responsibilities will primarily focus on architectural design related to building practices and techniques, including topics such as construction systems, assembly/disassembly, building and systems integration, comprehensive design, high-performance systems, building envelope, building performance simulation, life-safety, codes and standards required for professional practice while addressing the challenges of climate change, equity and the role of technology through the agency of design. The role will involve teaching a range of design studios for the NAAB-accredited B.Arch and M.Arch programs, including vertically integrated option studios, and courses related to the candidate's core research. The candidate shall demonstrate their approach to teaching and pedagogy through examples of architectural design, research, and/or professional practice work examples.
Creative Practice, Research, and Scholarship: We welcome creative practice, research, and scholarship with a focus on integrative architectural design. Areas of focus may include but not be limited to creative strategies of decarbonization through building materials and assembly, enclosure/ envelope design, material circularity, and/or building performance reflective of diverse, multicultural contexts, including indigenous, non-western and/or practices of the Global South. The candidates are to articulate an actionable research agenda and/or scholarly practice that contributes to architectural discourse.
Service & Mentoring: This position will also provide academic and professional advising support for the B.A., B.Arch, and M.Arch programs. This will include constructing meaningful connections between the pedagogy of the school and practice within the profession. Additional service responsibilities to the university will be determined annually by the Head of the school.
Qualifications
We welcome a diverse range of applicants who through their teaching, research, service, and mentoring can make strong contributions to the intellectual, gender, cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity of the architecture discipline.
Qualifications
Qualifications include the following:
Graduate (professional, post-professional, terminal, or equivalent) degree in Architecture.
Candidates should demonstrate experience in architectural practice, practice-based research, or prior experience in teaching integrative architectural design.
Professional practice experience may extend beyond the North American context. We welcome expertise and experiences that reflect and serve the diversity of our students and the cultures they represent.
Candidates with substantial experience (5 years of practice) in architectural design practice or research looking to transition into teaching are welcome to apply.
