The School of Public Policy invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, Tenure Track (Annual), Assistant Professor position.
Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
The ideal candidate will conduct research that enhances understanding of the societal impacts of rapidly advancing technologies, such as robotics and artificial intelligence, within the context of the United States. Emphasis will be placed on candidates who can actively engage with the social dimensions of technology, exploring how technological advancements intersect with social values, ethics, minoritized groups, and other equity considerations.
The position of Assistant Professor in Public Policy with a focus on Technology Policy, Science Policy, and/or AI Policy represents an expansion of the school's commitment to addressing the complex intersections between emerging technologies and public governance. This position will conduct research that enhances understanding of the societal impacts of rapidly advancing technologies, such as robotics and artificial intelligence, within the context of the United States. The person in this position will actively engage with the social dimensions of technology, exploring how technological advancements intersect with social values, ethics, minoritized groups, and other equity considerations.
Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit.
Requirements :
Ph.D. in Public Policy or a closely related field (e.g., Economics, Political Science, Sociology, etc.) with a specialization in Technology Policy, Science Policy, AI Policy, or a related area by the start of the appointment.
Demonstrated expertise in rigorous empirical research to analyze and inform policy issues in technology, science, or AI.
Strong foundation in policy theory and program analysis, with a focus on understanding the societal impacts of technology, including robotics and AI, particularly within the U.S. context.
Experience with or ability to secure grant-funded research projects, as evidenced by previous grant submissions, awards, or demonstrated knowledge of the grant application process.
Commitment to teaching excellence at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with the ability to develop and teach courses in Science, Technology, and Policy that meet the needs of diverse students.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary environments and engage with stakeholders in policy discussions.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and service, with an understanding of how technology intersects with social values, ethics, and equity issues.
Established or developing record of scholarly publications or presentations in technology, science, or AI policy, indicating potential for impact in the field.
