Georgetown University seeks an experienced and visionary leader to serve as the Assistant Vice President for Academic Research Support and AI Enablement within University Information Services (UIS). The successful candidate will demonstrate extensive experience leading, developing, and supporting strategic technology services for academic research and AI initiatives, fostering innovation, and ensuring alignment with the university's mission. The AVP will be critical in shaping the technological landscape that empowers faculty and researchers to advance knowledge across disciplines. This critical position will work closely with the CIO executive team, the Vice Provost for Research, Georgetown Research Services (GRS), and students, faculty, and staff to enhance research for the common good at an interdisciplinary, international institution bestowed by the R1 designation/Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
Strategic Leadership
Collaborate with university stakeholders, research faculty, and other departments to understand to access current technology support offerings, identify gaps, and create a strategic roadmap that addresses both short and long-term technology needs.
Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends in academic research to inform strategic planning.
Provide strategic vision and leadership for academic research support services within UIS.
Leverage AI to further the university's research, teaching, learning, and service mission.
Be the trusted advisor at the senior level to guide research leadership through strategic planning and developing capabilities to drive innovation and efficiencies with technology.
Technology Solutions for Research
Develop and implement best-in-class enterprise technology solutions that support both the diverse needs of academic research and create economies of scale that complement the funding models of academic research.
Collaborate with researchers to understand their technology requirements and provide solutions that enhance their capabilities and deliver value for the university.
Ensure the integration of research support services with other UIS initiatives and university-wide strategies.
Deep understanding of the academic research lifecycle and user experiences of an academic researcher. Experience developing technical solutions to provide a high-quality experience for researchers and the university through value-based outcomes.
Build and oversee a sustainable technical support model for specialized hardware, operating systems, and software.
Leverage techniques such as machine learning to enhance research activities and analyze large data sets in an educational or research setting.
Adherence with HIPAA standards, data use agreements, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures and protocols.
AI Enablement
Develop Generative AI solutions, including workflow patterns like RAG and prompt engineering, while understanding GenAI's strengths, limitations, and vulnerabilities.
Experience conceiving, designing, and implementing innovative AI solutions to transform complex Enterprise-level business challenges.
Implement security controls - particularly around data and data access - as part of AI solutions.
Compliance with NIST AI 600 and NIST AI 100 security standards.
Team Management
Lead and manage a team of professionals dedicated to supporting academic research technology needs.
Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture, encouraging continuous learning and development.
Provide guidance and mentorship to team members to ensure effective support and delivery of services.
Partnership and Collaboration
Build and maintain strong partnerships with academic departments, research centers, and external partners.
Collaborate with other IT leaders, administrators, and faculty to identify opportunities for technology-driven research collaborations.
Represent UIS on university committees and initiatives related to academic research support.
Coordinate AI initiatives with campus stakeholders, including UISO and Office of General Counsel (OGC).
Budget Planning
Evaluate current and future technology offerings with a lens toward ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with strategic priorities.
Identify and advocate for additional resources when necessary to enhance research support capabilities.
Develop a roadmap for AI adoption with demonstrated ROI outcomes.
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President of Innovation and IT Services, the AVP for Academic Research Support and AI Enablement is a key member of the extended UIS leadership team and works closely with his/her supervisor and a team of other UIS Assistant Vice Presidents, Vice Provosts, Research Deans, JORA leadership, and campus stakeholders to set the vision, standards, and direction of the technology roadmap for research support at Georgetown University. The position will supervise multiple positions that provide different aspects of technical support to the research community.
Requirements and Qualifications
Master's degree required and PhD preferred in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related research-based discipline
Significant experience in leadership roles related to academic research technology support, preferably in a higher education setting
Proven experience in conducting academic research and managing research studies
8+ Years required experience
Experience in leading teams in the design, development, and operationalization of academic research technology solutions
Strong understanding of the research process and the technology needs of academic researchers
Proven experience in managing teams, budgets, and complex projects
Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
Preferred candidates will have extensive experience leading research and IT teams to deliver innovative solutions across a wide range of disciplines in a university or research center setting
Work Mode Designation
This position has been designated as Telework. However, up to 10% of work may be expected to occur in-person for events, meetings, and conferences. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Such review may necessitate a change to a position's mode of work designation. Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $103,723.00 - $202,778.93
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
