NYU Shanghai is currently accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Critical Studies of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This position is part of the University?s interdisciplinary research initiative, which investigates the social implications of AI through in-depth and creative engagement with emerging technologies in AI and machine-enabled automation. 

This is a two-year position starting in Fall 2025, and an earlier start is also possible for special cases. The appointment start date for non-Chinese applicants is subject to immigration regulations. The fellow will primarily work with Professor Jing Wang in Interactive Media and Business for research and publication. There are also opportunities to collaborate with NYU Shanghai and NYU New York faculty in other areas, including Computer Science, Data Science, Urban Studies, Interactive Media Arts, and Business & Finance to advance the interdisciplinary understanding of AI. 

Terms of employment at NYU Shanghai are comparable to NYU New York and other U.S. institutions.  

We welcome applications from scholars with a recent Ph.D. from all relevant social sciences and humanities fields, particularly communication studies, political economy, science & technology studies (STS), cultural studies, media studies, and information systems. Candidates who combine mixed methods, including but not limited to historical analyses, textual studies, statistics, and policy research, are preferred. We are particularly interested in scholars taking a critical approach to understanding the role of AI in shaping the domain of retail finance, media and entertainment, communication technology, consumer culture, or public governance. Exceptional ABD candidates who see themselves fit in the above intersections are also encouraged to apply.  

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be expected to devote their time to their own research agenda, as well as play a vital role in the research projects supervised by Professor Jing Wang, from data collection to analysis and research dissemination. There is no teaching requirement for this position. Around 10 percent of their workload will be organizing workshops, developing curriculum, and building relationships with external partners relevant to the supervised research projects. The candidates can also propose Shanghai-based scholarly activities, such as potential collaborations and/or workshops that can contribute to their own research and/or the research communities at NYU Shanghai.

2. Research Statement (not to exceed 500 words) ? Include research questions, topic significance, theoretical framework, methodological design, clear description of primary sources and necessary language skills, and work plan with projected date of project completion.

3. Statement of Institutional Fit (not to exceed 250 words) ? Explain how NYU Shanghai could boost your research potential and support your career development in the fields of your interests. You can also include proposed scholarly activities in this statement, if any.

4. CV ? List degrees, peer-reviewed publications, academic non-peer-reviewed publications, creative and public scholarship, invited talks, conference papers, other relevant qualifications, and language skills.

5. Project bibliography (not to exceed one single-spaced page, minimum font size 11) ? Include primary and secondary sources.

6. Letters of Recommendation ? Three referees? information are required, including one from the dissertation supervisor. Reference letters will only be required for finalists.

7. Up to two papers ? Published articles, book chapters, dissertation chapters are preferred.
