Paddock Equine Veterinary Services is a well-rounded private practice based in sunny south Florida in the Village of Wellington also known as "Horse Capital of The World". Wellington is lucky to be the home to Wellington International's Winter Equestrian Festival, Global Dressage Festival and National Polo Center formally called IPC. Our goal is to provide the highest standard of equine medicine and surgery for our patients. Our practice focuses on the most advanced diagnostics and treatments for equine athletes, pleasure horses or family equine companions. Our ambulatory practice is unique in that we have a veterinarian who is passionate about lameness and performance horses, a surgeon and internist making a perfect ambulatory trifecta. It takes a village to get to the level of competition in Wellington and we are privileged to be part of so many of these horse and rider teams.
Philosophy We believe that an internship should allow a new veterinarian the chance to expand their skill set, knowledge and exposure to equine practice with strong mentorship for as long as he or she needs. Our goal is to prepare you for future success independently in advanced well- rounded ambulatory practice. We are privileged to be a well respected boutique practice with a small but complete highly trained team. Our team includes a board certified surgeon (ACVS-LA), a board certified internal medicine specialist (ACVIM) and an ambulatory DVM with a focus on lameness and sports medicine (who grew up showing at WEF and continues to do so). We intend to never MAKE YOU feel alone or without as much or as little support needed throughout the year. In addition to our veterinarians we have 3 full time veterinary technicians; who are fantastic aids in all avenues of the practice perfecting efficiency.
Duties: Our intern will be intricately involved in a variety of ambulatory calls, will become proficient in taking and analyzing radiographs, performing and reading ultrasounds of the distal limb, thorax, abdomen and echocardiograms. He/She will be responsible for performing shockwave therapy treatments, helping and performing step by step lameness work ups with Sleip AI lameness video analysis software, pre-purchase/lease exams, upper airway endoscopy, gastroscopy, general care, referral cases, emergency medicine, and a variety of regenerative medicine therapies and laboratory testing and interpretation. This internship will not only show you how to become a great well rounded ambulatory veterinarian, it will also show you how to have a great work life balance. You will see first hand skills you won't learn everywhere. You will see how to balance being a parent, practice owner, amateur rider, busy vet along with an emphasis on client communication and working closely and respectfully with other colleagues during the summer months.
Practice: Dr. Leah Patipa born and raised in Wellington has a passion for sport horse medicine with a strong focus on performance horses. Dr. Axel Beccar Varela a native of Argentina, is a surgeon who also focuses on lameness cases. He performs a variety of elective procedures at referral hospitals for our clients or referral elective cases from other ambulatory veterinarians. Dr. Lisa Fultz a native of Canada, is an internal medicine specialist. She is extremely detailed orientated with exceptional skills in gastroscopy, upper airway endoscopy, full body ultrasonography, neurologic examinations, nutritional consults and also well rounded in general equine practice. Our services include but are not limited to: Elective Surgery (Routine orthopedic and soft tissue); Imaging -Digital Radiography, Digital Ultrasonography, Video Endoscopy/Gastroscopy, Shock Wave Therapy, Joint therapies (traditional, all forms of regenerative medicine and orthobiologics); Routine ambulatory services- including bi- annual vaccines and wellness exam, and emergency cases; in house parasite fecal egg count system, serum amyloid-A, stall side Wellness Ready insulin test, lactometer and we also count on same day laboratory results for most routine analysis, as well as local access to Nuclear Scintigraphy, low field MRI, and standing CT; from nearby referral practices.
