Job Description Summary
The transdisciplinary Institute for Policy, Ethics, and Culture (IPEC)is seeking a highly motivated, transdisciplinarily oriented ethicist interested in conducting cutting-edge research in applied ethics. Individuals will be developing an externally supported research portfolio, collaborating with Michigan Tech faculty on transdisciplinary research projects, and working with graduate students in the new Ph.D. program in Policy, Ethics, and Culture. This position requires as a self-directed research program as well as collaboration with faculty in the university to contribute an ethics component to research. A successful candidate will have a solid background in ethics and an area of application, such as environmental ethics, ethics in artificial intelligence, or engineering ethics. An ideal candidate would have an established track record in obtaining research funding in applied ethics.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
1. Participate as an integral team member representing the Institute for Policy Ethics and Culture (IPEC) on transdisciplinary research integrating ethics to address policy and socio-cultural issues, problems, and needs. 2. Provide ethics component for ongoing IPEC related research and development projects in scientific, technological, and humanistic disciplines. 3. Contribute to the generation of proposals and external funding related to IPEC. 4. Participate in the direction of PhD students in the graduate program in Policy, Ethics, and Culture. 5. Teach one graduate course per year for the PEC graduate program on applied ethics. 6. Contribute IPEC related ethics expertise to symposia, journal articles, and technical reports. 7. Prepare and deliver IPEC related reports or presentations of research projects/analysis results to project sponsors as appropriate. 8. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives. 9. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
• Ph.D. with significant emphasis in ethics and 1year related research experience.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
• Experience in the application of ethics in an area such as environmental ethics, ethics in artificial intelligence, or engineering ethics. • Experience with successful funding of research in applied ethics.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
• Experience teaching applied ethics at the graduate level. • Experience directing graduate student research programs. • Ability to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship without dual citizenship. • Excellent interpersonal, oral/written, and presentation communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. • Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment. • Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment with respect to significant matters related to job duties. • Demonstrated commitment to a healthy work environment.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
• Ability to clearly communicate ideas at meetings and symposia.
