Department Overview

The Northwest Native American Center of Excellence (NNACoE) sits within the Department of Family Medicine at OHSU. The goal of NNACoE is to recruit, train, and retain American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students and faculty to diversify the health professions workforce toward promoting and providing high quality, safe, and accessible healthcare. NNACoE supports AI/ANs at key moments along the education continuum, beginning as early as middle school and continuing through early faculty development.

NNACoE is committed to supporting AI/AN students, residents, and faculty along their career paths via innovative education and professional development initiatives. The AI/AN Learning Coordinator is responsible for 1) coordinating all NNACoE study efforts directed toward OHSU AI/AN learners, faculty, and candidates. They will also 2) support the development and implementation of learner rotations, courses, and culturally rooted curricula, and they will 3) support the retention and engagement of a growing network of Native faculty nationwide.

Function/Duties of Position

Study Coordination

• Build relationships with, and provide resources to AI/AN candidates of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and Graduate Medical Education (GME) at OHSU.
• Coordinate advising meetings between OHSU AI/AN students and NNACoE leadership.
• Support School of Medicine (SOM) Native health curriculum and clinic elective rotations under the guidance of NNACoE Director of UME/GME; Coordinate other AI/AN student support and community building opportunities to foster positive AI/AN learner experiences and retention at OHSU.
• Coordinate NNACoE's AI/AN faculty development efforts, including the Indigenous Faculty Forum and the Indigenous Faculty, Residents, and Fellows Research initiative.
• Participate in NNACoE's work with OHSU SOM Admissions and track admissions data across OHSU schools; contribute to strategic planning efforts for AI/AN recruitment and retention at OHSU.
• Coordinate all aspects of the Indigenous Food Garden. Communicate with OHSU facilities; manage care and maintenance of garden beds; connect with tribal and/or community members to facilitate educational garden engagement days with Wy'east scholars and AI/AN learners and faculty.

Research and Evaluation

• Collect and maintain up-to-date data on AI/AN learners, faculty, and candidates at OHSU by department and year, closely following and reporting on trends.
• Ensure successful data collection and management for NNACoE projects according to study timelines and goals; collaborate closely with the evaluation team to develop and administer instruments; improve communication between project teams regarding evaluation; work closely with NNACoE leadership and evaluation team on strategy and execution.
• Contribute to writing and preparation of manuscripts; develop and maintain NNACoE bibliography for projects.
• Present at national meetings; develop presentation slides and posters.
• Support NNACoE's non-academic dissemination strategy and efforts (e.g. visual stories or social media).

Study Logistics

• Coordinate and monitor non-clinical elements of student progress in Sakai for UME/GME AI/AN elective(s) and virtual learning sessions as needed;
• Support grant reporting efforts for NNACoE; contribute to grant proposals with NNACoE leadership.
• Design and implement learning seminars, workshops, and community events; Support other event planning and execution as needed across the NNACoE portfolio.
• Create agendas, prepare meeting materials, reserve rooms/venues, provide A/V and remote connection support, and taking meeting minutes.

Required Qualifications

Education:

• Master's in relevant field AND 1 year of relevant experience OR
• Equivalent combination of training and experience

Experience:

• This team member must have knowledge and experience working with American Indian/Alaska Native organizations and communities.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

• Proven ability to manage time effectively, especially with competing priorities
• Must demonstrate outstanding verbal and written communication skills while interacting with diverse stakeholders and in a variety of settings (University faculty, tribes and tribal organizations, youth, volunteers).
• Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as in a team environment
• Intermediate computer knowledge and skills using MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook).
• Must have strong organizational skills and be very detail oriented. Must be able to respond quickly to time sensitive tasks.

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:

• Must have valid Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

• Master's degree in education, counseling, public health, social work, or STEM discipline

Experience:

• Student mentorship and evaluation experience with AI/AN students and/or pathway programs.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

• Experience using survey development and data management programs and/or data visualization tools.
