Postdoctoral Fellow in Medical Humanities

The Medical Humanities Program at Rice University seeks to appoint one postdoctoral fellow in the humanities or interpretive social sciences, with preference for research and teaching that engages with racial and other forms of health equity and inequity. Projects taking a patient- or community-centered and intersectional approach are highly desired. The Program includes faculty from diverse fields in the humanities and social sciences, has strong partnerships with science and engineering disciplines, and collaborates with numerous institutions in the Texas Medical Center and the broader Houston community. The Fellow would teach a 1/1 course load and help to build the Program's existing strength in racial and other forms of health (in)equity in the context of medical/health humanities as we expand our applied research and partnerships in this area.

We seek emergent scholars whose research is rooted in critical medical/health humanities and who received a PhD in a humanities or interpretive social science discipline. The Medical Humanities Program hosts an interdisciplinary minor that attracts a diverse and growing undergraduate student population, particularly those on pre-health tracks. The successful applicant will develop courses in their field and may also teach an existing "Introduction to Medical Humanities" course.

This position is in the Rice University School of Humanities and is for the period from July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024 with possibility of extension through June 30, 2025, pending successful completion of the first year. This is a full-time, residential fellowship with a 1/1 teaching load and is benefits eligible. The fellow will receive an annual salary of $75,000 with a $2,000 research stipend per year, and up to $3,000 reimbursement allowance for relocation to Houston.

Responsibilities will include:

• Teaching/co-teaching courses in consultation with the Medical Humanities Program and affiliated campus units
• Collaborative authorship of position papers and research articles
• Outreach and research presentations to the medical/health humanities community at Rice and in Greater Houston
• Research-related outreach to local and national news media
• Active participation in Medical Humanities events and programming

Eligibility:

Applicants from any humanistic discipline are eligible to apply and must have the PhD in hand by June 1, 2023. The eligibility window for applicants is within seven (7) years of conferral of PhD. Applicants must have demonstrated research interest in racial or other forms of health equity and have excellent communication, collaboration, administration, and time-management skills.

• 1,000-word research project proposal for work to be completed during the postdoctoral fellowship, including discussion of the collaborative and outreach potential of the project
• Writing sample (approximately 25 pages)
• Two-page course proposal for a 14-week undergraduate course in a topic related to health equity concerns
• Teaching statement
• Names, titles, and contact information for three references, who may be contacted to submit letters of recommendation
